Automotive Rust Repair

Put Your Welding Skills to Work!

You've learned how to weld. Now it's time to apply those skills to real automotive restoration!

Rust repair isn't really about rust. It's about removing damaged metal and replacing it with a carefully fabricated replica of the original panel. Our goal is to restore what the manufacturer originally intended—as if the damage never happened!

In this hands-on class, you'll learn CAD (Cardboard Aided Design), using paper and cardboard to model replacement panels before fabricating them from sheet steel.

What You'll Learn

  1. Prepare: Remove paint, grease, and surface rust.

  2. Reverse Engineer: Understand the original panel design.

  3. Plan: Determine what metal needs replacing.

  4. Model: Create paper and cardboard templates.

  5. Cut: Surgically remove damaged metal.

  6. Select: Choose the correct replacement steel.

  7. Fabricate: Cut, bend, and shape your patch.

  8. Test: Dial in your MIG welding settings.

  9. Weld: Install your patch using controlled pulse welding.

  10. Finish: Grind and inspect your repair.
